stx ushers in "modern lacrosse"

At first, traditionalists were resistant to the idea of using a synthetic lacrosse stick but the skepticism did not last long. Almost overnight, players using the new sticks found they had better stick work, more control and the ability to play a faster-paced game.  In 1970, the NCAA Lacrosse Championship game was still dominated by wooden sticks, but just one year later, the 1971 Championship Game was played using all synthetic sticks.

Another benefit to the new sticks was that a left or right-handed player could use one. Since wooden sticks were crafted for either left or right-handed players, left-handed players were often out of luck if their stick broke, since the lefty sticks were often in shorter supply. (Synthetic sticks are not unbreakable but have been proven to far outlast their wooden ancestors).
